Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, John Turturro, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Patrick Dempsey

Director: Michael Bay (Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Island)

Genre: Action

This is the 3rd film in the “Transformers” series, again directed by Michael Bay and starring Shia LaBeouf as the main character. Typically, movies tend to get worse as the series gets longer. So does “Transformers 3” also fit this pattern?

Watch “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Now!

Well, the answer to that depends on whether you’re a hardcore fan of the original cartoon or only a fan of the movies. But first, let’s briefly go over the story.

Story: During the original Cybertron war (Transformers’ home planet), an Autobot spaceship evacuated with a secret technology. However, it crashed on the moon later to be discovered by American astronauts. When the Autobots find out about this, they must find the ship and the secret technology before the Decepticons.

I must admit, I was a huge fan of the original “Transformers” cartoon as a child. So I appreciate the effort put into the “Transformers” movies, however they are quite different than the original. I also must admit that I am a fan of Michael Bay’s other movies (e.g. “Bad Boys”, “The Rock”, and “Armageddon”) so I love the way he makes action movies.

Shia LaBeouf plays the same character and most of the original cast is back. The only noticeable change is that Megan Fox’s character has been replaced by a new beautiful girl by the name of Rosie Huntington-Whitely who plays basically the same character.

On a simple level, this edition has nothing new to offer from the first two. If you love good action scenes and don’t care about the story so much, you will love this movie. There are indeed some breathtaking action sequences. However, if you are diehard fan of the originals like me, you might be disappointed because there is very little connection to the original cartoon.

But no matter what your background is, you have to give credit to Mr. Bay—he sure knows how to make a movie LOUD, how to make action look great on screen, and how to make a lot of money!

Score: 7/10

Hello.I watched this movie yesterday. I watched the 2nd movie, too. As I’ve thought that both stories are different thing, I needed a little time to understand the story.
I couldn’t understand character of Optimus at first. As he is a commander of Autobots, I think he must be the strongest Autobot and he must be confident in everything. But, he always worries about the relationship among human, Autobot, and Decepticon. He looks a little weak(Sorry!), because he often injured (?) during the fighting. He looks human-like. He may be different from old Japanese hero. Old Japanese heros are always perfect and they never hesitate. So, Optimus is a new character to me. I like him.
Compared to Japanese technique, U.S. computer graphic is great. Its effect is speedy, powerful and giddy. I can’t enough word to express it. I was almost vertiginous.
By the way, I heard that Transformer originated from Japanese animation. Is it true?

        Hi Misa!

Thank you for your interesting insights! I guess I never thought about or never knew about traditional Japanese heroes. It must just be a different type of hero and/or leadership style. The CG was very impressive as I expected and they made the destruction of Chicago look very real. Regarding the origins of Transformers, I was always wondering if it came from Japan or not and I’ve heard various things. So let’s check Wikipedia…it says that the original toys were invented in Japan but without names. Hasbro, the American toy company, bought the figures and gave them names and personalities which then became the origin of the animated cartoon. So, it was kind of joint venture I guess:)

          Hello.
Thank you for your reply. My nephew likes Transformer, too. Do you know McDonald’s happy set (children’s menu)? If you buy it, you get Transformer’s figure (doll). The 1st series are “Talking Optimus Prime” and “Awaking Bumblebee”. As he wanted them, he asked me to take him to McDonald last weekend. After we ate happy sets, we played with them. His role was Optimus and mine was Bumblebee. We are going to buy and get the 2nd series this weekend.

Sounds fun! Yes, I remember those kind of toys at McDonald’s when I was young. Actually, I also collected the original Transformers toys! So I can understand why your nephew likes them! Thanks again for sharing and have a great weekend!

Hello, Alsensei. Thank you for your helpful review. I’m planing to go see that movie with my wife. Actually, we don’t know neither the previous series nor the original cartoon story. But from what you’ve mentioned in your review I found we would be able to enjoy it without them.

Hello! Yes, you don’t really need to have seen the first two to enjoy this one. It is a pretty simple action movie and if that’s what you’re expecting, you’ll have a great time. You may not be used to some of the characters at first but you’ll learn quite quickly. Have fun and let me know what you think afterwards! Enjoy!
