This animated movie came out last year (2010) without much notice in Japan. It was produced by Dreamworks and based on a children’s book of the same title. I recently rented this on DVD after hearing good things from friends. Was it worth the rental?
I don’t watch too many animated movies but I do check out ones occasionally that are recommended to me or make a lot of buzz. “How to Train Your Dragon” is one of those that fits both of those categories.
Story: On a remote island where Vikings live and constantly fight dragons that attack them, a young Viking boy struggles to become a dragon warrior like his father. However, after catching his own dragon, he realizes that maybe they don’t have to be enemies.
This movie was originally released in the movie theaters in 3D. I rented it on DVD and watched it in 2D but the graphics and effects were still outstanding. For an animated film, the scenes are breathtaking and the story has a very touching message.
It is, of course, for kids but adults can also enjoy this movie. Kids will enjoy the action and cuteness of the dragons and characters as adults will enjoy the humor and overall mood of the movie.
Despite the lack of any major actors (except maybe for Gerard Butler), the characters are portrayed very well and the story is told flawlessly. I highly recommend this movie to anyone with or without kids as the story is simple yet good and the graphics are amazing.
Vocabulary for Study:
