Starring: Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon

Director: Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, Gran Torino)

Genre: Drama, Biography

I rented “Invictus” last week on DVD and although the movie didn’t receive much praise during last year’s Academy Award season, I knew it starred Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon; two very solid actors. So how did they do?
Watch “Invictus” Now!

They both performed extremely well and carried the movie all the way through.

Unfortunately, the person who failed this movie was the director, Clint Eastwood. Usually known for his great storytelling, this movie completely lacked any style or tension.

The movie is based on a true story and is a good one. Nelson Mandela, recently freed from prison and new president of South Africa, sees the opportunity to bring racial harmony through the country’s rugby team and run through the 1995 World Cup. Matt Damon plays the captain of the team.

As you can guess, the story and outcome is quite predictable. The rugby match scenes are shot well but not edited well together. And there is some dialogue in this movie that is unforgivably awful.

If you like a good and uplifting story with good acting, check it out! If you’re looking for good storytelling, read the book instead.
