Agreeing and Disagreeing

As we saw in Speaking Skills 8, learning how to give an opinion is a very valuable skill. But, if you hear someone else’s opinion, how should you respond? In this lesson, we learn how to agree and disagree so that you can continue a conversation with someone naturally.

Here are some basic expressions to AGREE with any opinion:

I agree.
I agree with you.
I totally/completely agree with you.

Here are some basic expressions to DISAGREE with any opinion:

I disagree/I don’t agree.
I disagree/I don’t agree with you.
I’m afraid I don’t agree with you.

We also look at some strategies to AGREE and DISAGREE:

AGREE: Use a similar word
DISAGREE: “Yes, but…”
